Arsenal defeated Southampton on Wednesday 2-0 as they maintain their focus on a top four finish this season.

Alexis Sanchez combined with Olivier Giroud to deliver second half goals that wrecked the Saints in their own backyard.

The first half started dull as both sides were careful of making mistakes early in the game. Sanchez used the magic wand to deliver the opener. He went past two defenders in the box before scoring. Giroud came off the bench to add the other goal by heading the ball in minutes after coming in.

The Saints rarely put up a strong fight as they seem complacent mid-table. ManoloGabbiadini had his chance in the first half. His effort was saved by Gunner goalie PetrCech to keep them in the tenth spot.
The victory lifts Arsenal over Manchester United. They are three points above Manchester City who seem are the favourites for the third spot. Liverpool played a goalless draw with Southampton and they face West Ham United away next.

Liverpool are still the favourites for the final Champions League spot as they play Middlesbrough in the last game of the season while Arsenal battle Everton after playing Stoke and Sunderland.
Arsenal’s poor run from January to April have affected their chances this season. In the last six games, they have won four timesas they seek Champions League football next term.

Sanchez continued his brilliant form, rising to the occasion when it mattered. The goal was obviously the game changer as it helped the Gunner ease through the building pressure. The Chilean scored his 20th goal of the season. Only five players in the club’s history have done this: Ian Wright, Thierry Henry, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie. Sanchez also equalledAdebayor’s away goals record of 14 goals. The 14 away goals is the highest a player has scored in the Premier League this term.
